Artist Spotlight: Only a Visitor | 2022 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival ? “Things that I like to play with in the project is having the vocals combine together to sort of act like an instrument”.

Vocalist/pianist Robyn Jacob’s eclectic avant-pop compositions and adventurous vocal arrangements evoke Bjork, TuNe-YaRdS, and Dirty Projectors. According to Discorder Magazine, Only A Visitor is “one of the most fascinating and singular musical projects to come out of Vancouver in recent memory”.

In this interview, @robynckj talks about finding her way in the music industry and how Coastal Jazz helped @only.a.visitor set up their first major cross-Canada tour!

Only a Visitor is performing June 27 at Ocean Art Works. Many thanks to @granville_island for providing us with the filming location.

KeAloha | 2022 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival ? “A lot of my inspiration comes from weaving these dreamy ancestral soundscapes that are led by this percussion and rhythm because my first instrument was drums. And also tying in the stories and mythology that I’m slowly learning about my Indigeneity.”

Carrying essences of KeAloha's mixed Indigeneity, the vast wisdoms and sounds of Black and Latinx music-cultures, and the not-so-guilty pop pleasures they grew up on, this project holds the stories of a brown, mixed-Indigenous, disabled femme. A vocalist/drummer/multi-instrumentalist KeAloha is a survivor, dreamer, healer and weaver. Presented in association with @musicfullcircle.

In this interview, talks about their love of dance, weaving Indigenous culture into their music, and the amazing performers they’ve seen at the Jazz Festival over the years.

KeAloha is performing as DJ KoaKeA on June 24 at Ocean Art Works, and also with their band on July 3 at David Lam Park at 12PM - visit our website for more info.

Many thanks to @granville_island for providing us with the filming location.
